Maldives has always been a romantic destination known for its pristine beaches, alluring blue waters, teeming marine life, charming islands and amazing resorts. For these reasons alone, visitors from all parts of the world do not fail to visit the islands frequently.

However there is now yet another reason to visit the charming islands. This is the unique and amazing experience of dining underwater. The Ithaa restaurant was the first of its kind in the world. Designed by New Zealand design company – MJ Murphy Ltd, the restaurant features a transparent acrylic roof and walls and was built in its entirety in Singapore and thereafter shipped to the Maldives and sunk into place.

Seating a maximum of 12 – 14 persons, bookings for a meal of lunch or dinner has to be made well in advance – in some instances almost one year ahead. However the wait is well worth it as all diners are mesmerised by the sheer colour, diversity and brilliance. The unique design allows for a 270 degree panoramic view of the Maldivian sea bed. Dive into a culinary wonder featuring seasonal European fare complemented by a selection of champagne’s whilst virtually sitting a short distance away from sharks, rays, colourful coral fish and other amazing marine life. The recent situating of a coral garden adds colour and life to the display.

Apart from lunch and dinner, the restaurant can also be booked for mid morning cocktails, wedding receptions and other small functions.

Following in Ithaa’s footsteps is the unique four level restaurant Sky, Salt, Fire and Sea – each at a different level, serving different cuisines and offering completely different atmospheres. The lowest of these levels is the sea restaurant which is underwater. A stellar wine cellar is also situated under sea level.

Whichever restaurant you opt for, at which ever time of day, there is no doubt that the experience of dining underwater will captivate your senses like never before. The view each time you visit is bound to be different. When visiting the islands there are many a Maldives resort to choose from. The Anantara Veli Maldives offers all amenities and provides some of the most unique and luxurious Maldives bungalows ever.
