Set amidst the mountains of Sri Lanka, Kandy is referred to as the hill capital and is known for its rich culture. That said, what you may not realise is that it’s also a great destination for foodies looking to try some flavour-filled island dishes.

Rice and Curry
A staple across the country, rice and curry are a perennial fave, so ensure you try it during a holiday at local hotels like Kandy Myst by Cinnamon. The rice generally comes in red or white varieties, while you will also get a wide range of curries (some can be spicy) to enjoy with it. Popular options in Kandy include slow-cooked chicken curry, sour fish curry and polos curry made with jackfruit.

Hoppers
Firstly, please note that if you see “hoppers” on the menu of roadside eateries or restaurants of 4 star hotels in Kandy, Sri Lanka, it is NOT the insect variety! What you will get is a bowl-shaped culinary creation with a soft centre, much like a pancake, while the sides are thin and crispy. You can enjoy it with curries and spicy sambol, and don’t forget to try the egg hopper variety, with an egg fried in the centre.

Kottu Roti
When it comes to street food in Kandy, you definitely need to try kottu roti, which is actually popular across Sri Lanka. Of course, getting to see (and hear!) it being made is part of the experience; watch as a skilful chef rhythmically chops up flatbread on a griddle and mixes in meat or seafood, veggies, spices, egg and sometimes even cheese. Eat it like a local with spicy curry or gravy and some iced ginger beer, which adds its own “kick” to the meal!

Ceylon Tea

No foodie tour here would be complete without also trying the globally famous Ceylon Tea in the region of its origin. In fact, tea is grown in and around areas like Kandy, where the cool climate and rich soil help to create a product which has a smooth taste. Stay in a mountain view room of a hotel so you can begin the day with a fresh cuppa, either plain (black tea) or with some milk, as you take in spellbinding vistas.
