Exploring Traditional Maldivian Dishes
A Real Taste of Maldivian Cooking You Shouldn’t Miss
Maldivian cuisine is shaped by the sea, the coconut palm, and a long history of island living. It’s fresh, simple and full of flavour. Beyond resort menus and beach barbecues, local dishes tell stories of survival, trade and celebration. These meals are everyday favourites for many islanders.
Mas Huni: A Breakfast Classic
Mas huni is a mix of smoked tuna, grated coconut, onion and chilli, served with warm flatbread called roshi. It’s light but filling and is eaten almost every morning in local homes. Many top Maldives all-inclusive resorts offer mas huni on their breakfast buffets, but the freshest versions are often found in small cafés on local islands.
Garudhiya: Clear, Comforting and Full of Depth
Garudhiya is a fragrant fish broth made with tuna, salt and lime, often served with rice, onions, chilli and lime wedges. It’s a simple meal, but it’s deeply loved for its clean flavours. Guests at properties such as Adaaran Resorts sometimes enjoy garudhiya during themed Maldivian nights, offering a glimpse into island home cooking.

Fihunu Mas: Grilled and Spicy
Fihunu mas is grilled fish seasoned with a Maldivian chilli paste. It’s typically served at night and cooked over coconut husk coals, which give it a smoky edge. You’ll often see it served whole with sides like rihaakuru and roshi.
Hedhikaa: The Local Short Eats
These are small savoury snacks sold at tea shops, often in the afternoon. Favourites include bajiya (stuffed pastry), gulha (fried tuna balls), and keemia (tuna rolls). Locals pair them with sweet black tea while catching up with friends.
