Luang Prabang is an excellent destination to enjoy Laotian cuisine with rich flavours that foodies will love discovering. Of course, you will have plenty to choose from and here are some interesting dishes you can try when you visit.
Where You Stay is Important
Before going into what you should eat, it should be noted that where you stay is also important. Go with centrally located properties like Avani+ Luang Prabang Hotel, which not only has its own restaurant but is also within walking distance from the Luang Prabang Night Market, the best place to discover the local food scene; from savouries to sweets, you can find everything here.
Khao Soi and Pho Neua
Made with noodle soup, pork and other vegetables, this dish is a must-try when you are in this destination, and it can be found at many dining venues in the city. Of course, don’t forget you get other noodle dishes too, like pho neua, a Lao-style beef noodle soup served at local restaurants, including those at key Luang Prabang hotels.
Khao Jee Sandwich
Inspired by French baguettes, the khao jee sandwich is filled with grilled meats, fresh vegetables and sauce. You can find this dish at many street vendors in Luang Prabang.
Fresh Mekong River Fish
Many restaurants in Luang Prabang serve freshly caught fish from the Mekong River, often grilled with herbs or prepared in flavourful local sauces. If you would like to enjoy some fresh fish, this dish is a must-try.
Sticky Rice
Rice is a staple in most Asian countries, and Laotian cuisine is no different. Generally eaten by hand by the locals, sticky rice, usually paired with meat or grilled fish, is not to be missed either and makes for a fulfilling meal.
