Dining Out in Koh Samui: Top Local Treats Every Foodie Should Enjoy
Boasting a culinary heritage that’s a delectable combination of Thai, Chinese, Middle Eastern and continental influences, Koh Samui is a foodie’s dream destination. Here’s a rundown of the top local dishes every traveller should sample during a trip to the sun-kissed beach hub.
Pla Muek Yang (Grilled Squid)
As a delightful snack that serves as the perfect starter, Pla Muek Yang is a grilled squid dish that’s a staple at local barbeques. Grilled to perfection over a charcoal grill, the succulent meat is seasoned with lime, fish sauce and chilli powder to give it its characteristic spicy flavour.
Tom Yum Goong
Often described as a soup that’s imbued with the “taste of the ocean,” Tom Yum Goong is a popular broth that graces the menus of Anantara Lawana Koh Samui Resort restaurants and other Koh Samui resort dining outlets. Sweet, sour and spicy in taste, the soup also features kaffir lime leaves and lemongrass stalks that give the dish its signature punch, while the fresh shrimp is responsible for its sweetness.
Massaman Curry
Tracing its origins to the island’s Islamic community, Massaman Curry is a beef side dish that’s known for its tender texture and creaminess. Chunky potatoes are also added into this velvety smooth curry that’s often paired with steamed rice.
Kanom Krok Bai Tuey (Coconut Rice Pancakes)

Fried on cast iron moulds that are placed above an open flame, coconut rice pancakes or “half-moon” pancakes are a must-try breakfast dish in Koh Samui. Featuring a custard-infused centre, the rice flour pancakes are crispy on the outside and are widely accessible via street food vendors on the island.
