A Food Lover’s Guide to Singapore
Must-Try Dishes, Hawker Stalls & Hidden Gems
Singapore really has earned its reputation as a food paradise. Whether it’s classic Peranakan cuisine, authentic Chinese or the bold flavours of Indian and Arabic fanfare, the Lion City knows how to show food lovers a good time. Here’s a quick guide to exploring the best it has to offer.
Top Dishes to Try
You likely won’t be able to try all of Singapore’s best dishes during your stay. But you can’t leave without trying these classics;
- Laksa – vermicelli noodles with coconut milk, dried shrimp and a topping of cockles, prawns, eggs, and fresh laksa leaves.
- Hainanese chicken rice – often touted as the country’s national dish, this flavoured rice with generous servings of chicken is simple yet fulfilling.
- Hokkien Prawn Mee – thick, stir-fried vermicelli noodles with prawns, pork belly, squid and egg.

Hawker Centres to Visit
Hawker culture is at the centre of Singapore’s street food scene. These food centres are not just easy on the wallet; their busy vibe makes you feel one with the locals. You’ll find a hawker centre anywhere you go, but some of the best in the city are Maxwell Food Centre, Newton Food Centre and Lau Pa Sat. The Maxwell Centre is one of the easiest to reach, just a short walk from hotels like Mercure ICON Singapore City Centre.
Restaurants You Shouldn’t Miss
If you’re staying at 4-star hotels in Singapore, you’ll already have access to great restaurants. But if you want a change of scene, there’s plenty out there to visit:
- Gua Hoe Soon – the oldest Peranakan restaurant in Singapore
- Warong Nasi Pariaman – if you want the best nasi padang, this is your best bet
- The Ship Restaurant & Bar – mimicking the interiors of a ship, this Hainanese steakhouse treats guests to a fun yet authentic dining experience
Areas Known for Their Street Food
The great thing about Singapore is that each of its neighbourhoods offers a different culinary world. Chinatown is one of the obvious spots, but Little India is brilliant too, brimming with bold flavours and spices. Katong is where Peranakan cuisine is most authentic, and Kampong Glam is where Arabic cuisine is best enjoyed.
