What to See During Sakura Season – Spring Highlights in Kyoto
Kyoto in spring can be a bit busy and dreamlike all at once. Cherry blossoms take over temple grounds, riversides, and old streets, but the season’s charm isn’t limited to the flowers themselves. Traditions, performances, and seasonal events are part of it too. Here’s what you can’t miss.
Hanami
This is the classic spring experience in Kyoto. It simply means flower viewing, but it’s more than standing under a tree and taking a photo. People gather in parks, along canals, and near rivers to enjoy the blossoms. Places like Maruyama Park and the Philosopher’s Path are especially popular because the cherry trees create that wonderful sakura feeling people come to Kyoto for.

Spring Night Illuminations
One of the nicest things about sakura season in Kyoto is that the day does not have to end after sunset. During spring, some temples, shrines, and gardens open for special evening light-ups. Seeing cherry blossoms lit up at night is one of the best experiences in Kyoto. The entire city becomes much more atmospheric during these spring night illuminations.
Miyako Odori
Miyako Odori is one of Kyoto’s best-known spring events. It has been performed since 1872 and is staged by the geiko and maiko of Gion Kobu. Since the show runs all through April, it goes hand in hand with spring in Kyoto. It’s a good pick if you want your trip to include both cherry blossoms and a more cultural experience.
Aoi Matsuri

If you stay until mid-May, Aoi Matsuri is another major spring event to catch. Held on May 15, it is one of Kyoto’s three major annual festivals and is known for its long procession of participants in elegant Heian-period dress. The festival allows you to see a more ceremonial and historic side of Kyoto.
