Just north of the centre, the streets around Truc Bach Lake are known for pho cuon, rolled rice noodles wrapped around beef and herbs. Ngu Xa Street in particular has earned the nickname Pho Cuon Street, lined with stalls that have been perfecting the dish for years, a short stroll from the lake itself and a world quieter than the Old Quarter's dinner rush hour.

West Lake's Morning Markets

Around Quang An near West Lake, mornings bring local produce markets and lakeside food stalls that feel a world away from Old Quarter tourism. It's a good place for banh tom, crispy shrimp fritters, alongside a slower, more residential pace than the city centre.

Southern Hanoi's Lunch-Only Stalls

South of the centre, in neighbourhoods where Hanoi's office workers actually live and eat, lunch-only stalls serve some of the city's best-value meals. These places are less "polished", and their menus are rarely translated into English; that said, they're well worth the short trip out, for anyone who wants a taste of how locals eat on an ordinary weekday.
