Preparing for Phuket Street Food Adventures
Tasty Faves for Foodies on Their First Visit
No doubt, for many, Phuket conjures images of sun-kissed beaches, island-hopping escapades and fun nightlife. But don’t forget that this Thai island also offers delectable street food for those with taste buds craving for some exotic island flavours!
Moo Ping
Moo ping is the ultimate grab-and-go breakfast, but don’t be surprised if you see it served all day. Served on skewers and best enjoyed with some sticky rice, the marinated pork is infused with ingredients like garlic, palm sugar, coconut milk and fish sauce. The aroma alone will have you lining up at street stalls, and once you take that first bite, you will see just why this dish is a perennial favourite.
Seafood Galore
Not surprisingly, on an island, seafood is plentiful and is not to be missed, whether enjoying street food or fine dining. Phuket lobster and jumbo prawns grilled to perfection are definitely worth savouring at places like Age Restaurant. On your foodie adventures, look to also try dishes like steamed seabass with chilli and lime (pla kapong neung manao) and stir-fried yellow curry crab (bu pad pong kari).

Som Tam
If you are wondering if there are any good vegetarian dishes in Phuket, don’t worry, you will not be disappointed. Definitely try som tam, a zesty green papaya salad that hits all the right culinary notes. Tangy, sweet, spicy and salty flavours combine with lime, chilli, fish sauce, palm sugar and sometimes beans, tomatoes and carrots. Some versions include brined crab, for those looking to add some flavours of the sea.
Roti
Of course, no list of street food in Phuket is complete without a roti treat. While you do get a savoury version, the sweet option is yummy indeed, and the great thing is, you can watch as vendors cook it on large hotplates right in front of you. The typical version is a banana-filled roti drizzled with condensed milk, then cut into bite-sized squares. Make sure you save room in your tummy, because it’s too good to resist!
