Foodie Goodies in Dubai
Satisfying Your Food Cravings
Emirati cuisine has been a mystery to the world at large up until the recent day and age. Thanks to the globalisation efforts of food entrepreneurs, the delicious dishes of the Arab subcontinent have recently found their way to the global stage, letting the world bask in its flavours and spices. From delicious bread and pastries to exotic camel dishes and Arabic coffees, there’s so much to discover about this little-known food palate and some dishes you simply must try before you depart.
Knafeh
Originally with Palestinian origins, this pastry delight is a wonderful concoction of cheese, sugar syrup, and dough. Best served when fresh, this dish has become a local favourite all across the UAE and is a dessert to die for. During Ramadan times, the food has become so popular that the orders for it reach into the thousands and is a popular order for Iftar, when observing Muslims break their fast.
Camel
Traditionally not consumed by Emirati folk, the recent advances in cuisine across the world have adventurous chefs try their hand with this unfamiliar meat, creating everything from camel burgers to camel biriyani. Additionally, there has been a rise in popularity for camel milk, higher in protein and saltier than regular cow milk. If that doesn’t suit your tastes, you can also try camel ice cream, found in many of the best restaurants in Dubai.
Dates and Arabic Coffee
Somewhat of a staple in the Arabic regions, the traditional snack of dates and coffee is a must-try dish when visiting these parts of the world. Offered in most places, such as government buildings, hotel foyers, and other establishments as an option for refreshments, the signature “Qahwa” coffee created with cardamom and lightly roasted coffee beans is a delightful and exotic choice for travellers.
Margoogat
A tomato-based stew packed full of meat, the Margoogat dish is a delectable feast prepared with many spices, such as turmeric, cumin, and local bazaar spice. While different variations across the city use different meats, the most popular options being chicken or lamb, it’s an exciting cuisine that shouldn’t be missed and is served at many high-profile resorts and hotels across the country, such as the NH Collection Dubai The Palm, as part of local fare.
