Being one of the world’s foremost culinary capitals, Hong Kong presents visitors to the city a gastronomic array of delights to indulge in. The Hong Kong Food and Wine Year is part of an initiative that was launched in 2009 to promote this image. The festival isn’t actually a festival in the traditional sense but is rather a year long promotion of food in Hong Kong. It gathers the support of approximately 2,000 restaurants, famous dining districts, and twenty five renowned local gourmets in addition to popular tourist attractions.

The key strength that draws people to Hong Kong is the Governments extremely friendly taxation on imported wines offering variety of the exclusive drink at attractive prices. It is for this alone that wine connoisseurs from around the world find a trip to Hong Kong worthwhile. This aspect also allows the casual taster to have a chance at indulging in this exclusive beverage.

As part of the Hong Kong Food and Wine Year visitors to the city will be able to partake in wine appreciation classes, and a tour that takes guests through the city’s best night and wine spots.

Though wine is a strong selling point of the festival there is a buffet of food to sample throughout the festival. The initiative began in April 2009 whilst its first stage ended in June. The initial foray of the first stage included over 1,000 restaurants providing special promotions including complimentary dishes, 50% discounts in addition to buy one get one free deals. Of course the restaurants that are part of the festival are upscale in nature and as always provide a luxurious ambiance and style.
