Namibia is home to many international cuisines such as German and English, however, the truly authentic taste of Namibia can still be found in a variety of local dishes. Here are some must-try dishes to treat your tastebuds and savour the delectable memories.

Mieliepap

One of the most popular dishes in Namibia, mieliepap is as unique as its name. Made with cornmeal, water, and a pinch of salt, this porridge is vegan, dairy-free, and easy to make. Sometimes it is accompanied by pepper, onions, and vegetables to enhance the taste. You can find this dish in most restaurants in Windhoek and if you’re staying at Avani Windhoek Hotel & Casino, you can probably request some mieliepap for breakfast!

Mahangu Soup

This rich, refreshing soup is made with fish, mutton, or lamb, and rice. Once the ingredients are mixed in an iron pot, mahangu, also known as pearl millet, is added to the soup. The taste is quite unique and brings the local goodness packed into a dish.

Potjiekos

A small iron pot known as potjie is used to make this dish, hence the name. The pot is placed on the fire, and meat, carrots, cabbage, pumpkin, potato starch, and cauliflower are added to the pot. The unique flavour is brought by the fresh spices and herbs used to cook the dish, along with the local vegetables and game meat.
