Kottu

 

This is popular snack you will run into in any street corner in the country. This is a shredded parata roti mixed with lots of spices, onions, vegetables, egg and any meat of your choice. It’s easy, delicious and goes perfectly with a cold beer.

 

Parippu

 

Also known as dhal curry, this is a staple in every Sri Lankan household. The Dhal is cooked with milk turmeric powder and chili to make this dish. It is often paired with a plate of rice or bread.

Kiribath

 

This is prepared by cooking rice with coconut milk. It is often prepared to celebrate special occasions and traditional festivals such as the Sinhala and Tamil New year. This is a dish often available in the menus of any hotel in Colombo, Galle or Bentota restaurants including some popular hotels such as AVANI Bentota Resort & Spa.

Mallum

 

This is like a green salad. Often made with shredded coconut, some kind of green, onions, tomatoes and dash of lime. Often served cold but sometimes the mixture is slightly heated in a pan. This is again a dish paired with rice.
