Best food to try in Vanuatu – Discover the exotic flavours of Vanuatu cuisine!

Vanuatu is an island located in the tropics is surrounded by a sea that is rich in marine life and the islands volcanic land is fertile and rich in minerals and bears plants which are some of the tastiest tropical vegetables and fruits. This is the reason for the nation featuring a vibrant and decadent cuisine.

Things to remember and finding the right place dine

You could also find exotic meat items being served in Vanuatu restaurants but do keep in mind some of these creatures considered as food in Vanuatu, are threatened, endangered or vulnerable species. So please do some research before ordering your food and better to skip any food that raises environmental concerns. Also, be cautious when selecting a restaurant as some of these places practice very low standards of hygiene. Wild Pigeon

Found abundantly across the wilderness of Vanuatu the wild pigeon is a delicacy that is loved by the locals. The pigeons are served in almost all the hotels and restaurants in Vanuatu. Each restaurant has its own way of cooking wild pigeons but the most popular way is the roasting and commonly served with French white sauce.

Poulet fish

Poulet fish is known for its distinctive taste and food enthusiasts often say the fillet is like chicken. This fish is commonly found in the sea surrounding Vanuatu. The fish is generally baked whole filleted with edible flowers and herbs.

Lap Lap

Lap Lap being the national dish of Vanuatu, is prepared in a unique way. The islands abundant yams are the main ingredients of this dish. Lap Lap is prepared by grating the yam and pounding it to a paste then it is mixed with freshly squeezed coconut cream and is layered on top of banana leaves adding more coconut cream or banana and baking it wrapped in coconut leaves.
